The better question is why fashion (luxury is the first mover), spends hundreds of millions on blockchain technology for marketing and authentication—that still leaves making in darkness. If blindness is no longer a technical limit, what happened? Fashion’s problem today is they chose the wrong technology path. The problem going forward is that investments that can’t see informal ecosystems are sunk costs.

The issues under investigation sit outside fashion systems. Those systems weren’t built to see work—not because they couldn’t, but because information asymmetry creates pricing power. Opacity is more profitable than transparency because it lets brands control narratives, margins, and market access. Fashion monetized the blindness. Paying fines costs less than building traceability, which exposes legal risk and damages brand value.

Recent climate regulations and AI/blockchain innovations change the structure of value creation. Fashion’s agentic economy architecture begins with truth in data, logic, and experiences. The real risk now is structural exclusion from AI discovery and sales. When climate legislation is active, the strength of a firm’s Sustainable Competitive Advantage, (SCA) becomes inversely proportional to the distance between signed work (truth/trust) and value creation. Luxury fashion is running out of excuses.

THE GREAT INVERSION

Fashion hid behind sunglasses for decades. The lights just came on.

This graphic shows the Great Inversion. The X-axis measures distance from signed work — how far a firm’s data sits from where value is created. The Old Sustainable Competitive Advantage line rewarded that distance. Opacity and unstructured work data increased margins. Spending on ERP, audits, certificates, and private blockchains are now sunk costs.

After the 2025–27 compliance cliff, advantage moves to the Agentic SCA line. Firms that structure work as signed, machine-readable JSON-LD products, events, and agents get recommended, regulators trust, and customers choose. The only rational move now is to stop feeding Old SCA and build on Agentic SCA.

THE CORE PROBLEM | TECHNOLOGY CHOICES

The core problem is that fashion systems cannot see the messy physical reality of work, culture, and daily life. That blindness drives the failures now under investigation. Most luxury brands use Ethereum-style blockchains and data formats built for control and marketing—not for high-trust supply chains or regulatory scrutiny. These blockchains-for-money are great for authenticity and value transfers, but leave work invisible.

Real production—product details, labor conditions, transformation events—lives in the informal economy of workshops, side subcontractors, and paper trails the fashion’s tech choices cannot read. Fashion carries two technology debts: old technology (legacy ERP) and wrong technology (data formats incapable of seeing work). Together they leave fashion structurally blind to informal ecosystems—indirect subcontractors, unauthorized workshops, and exploitative labor. Brands filled gaps with stories, labels, approved-factory lists, and audits to compensate for what they could not see or structure.

Structured work data, not structured supplier data, drives future advantage. Legacy Enterprise Resource Planning platforms can see suppliers and transactions, but not work or the messiness of life. This is not “bad records” but a design choice that keeps informal data, climate remediation, fairness, the whole list of UN Sustainable Development Goals…outside the data model. To maintain a see-no-evil stance, brands rely on marketing claims to elide inconvenient histories. Strategic blindness and fines cost less than operational changes and structured data work that would expose liability and damage brand value—until now.

Both the old ERP stacks and the JSON/JSON-RPC blockchains share the same flaw: they structure agreements, not work. Orders, payments, and shipments answer “Did money move? Did goods move?” The investigated companies use Ethereum-style blockchains and data formats that keep informal work invisible.

DATA FORMATS

Data formats determine what fashion can “see”. JSON and JSON-RPC, the formats fashion uses, store data in silos. A JSON record says “Supplier X delivered 1,000 units.” It is structured and machine-readable, but it only captures agreements. Work stays invisible.

JSON-LD is a data format that links across systems to understand who did what, where, and when. Fashion avoided this level of context for decades—because once you document labor violations, you own them. A JSON-LD record can express “Worker A completed 50 units at Workshop B on December 3, using Material C from Source D under conditions E.” Each element—worker, location, materials, conditions—becomes accountable. Strategic ambiguity kept brands safe. Paying fines costs less.

Blockchains-for-money use JSON and JSON-RPC because they secure and transfer value. Blockchains-for-commons and Digital Public Infrastructure projects often use JSON-LD because it is flexible enough to document work and daily life. The whole point of emerging standards is to reduce greenwashing and information asymmetry by documenting interoperable environmental and circularity data.

The EU’s Digital Product Passport names JSON-LD for cross-border trade because its linked data structure enables circularity and agentic interactions. JSON-LD gives recyclers a clear view of material compositions and provenance across many systems. AI agents can check real-time product data instead of relying on marketing claims. Digital Public Infrastructure makes signing data at the point of value creation cheap, so informal economies can participate without GS1 fees or corporate integration.

Gucci, Prada, and the others are very sophisticated companies that know how to use data for marketing and inventory management. Why are supply chains different? Why did fashion choose to manage reputational risk, not structural risk? Protocol networks and Digital Public Infrastructure make informal economies visible. Private blockchain tracing projects like the Aura Blockchain Consortium (including Loro Piana and Tod’s) prioritize marketing capabilities over legal compliance and ethical management. In other words, blindness is a feature of legacy data architecture, not a bug.

Once this infrastructure is in place, blindness is no longer a technical limit. It is a deliberate choice that creates legal risk in major markets and structural exclusion from an agentic economy that cannot use unstructured data.

THE NEW ECONOMIC CALCULUS

Climate regulations and the $3 to $5 trillion Agentic Economy invert the economic calculus. They turn opacity from a source of profit into an existential liability. Paying fines was a rational choice that cost less than building real traceability. Today, non-compliance blocks geographic and agentic economy market access.

Historically, opacity was how brands made money and built brand. But 2026 climate legislation in the EU, California, Australia, and other jurisdictions inverts economic rewards and rewires cost structures. When opacity becomes a regulatory risk, legacy firms must rebuild their data architecture to convert messy unstructured data into JSON-LD formats. Simply paying fines is no longer a rational economic decision.

Firms built for Yesterday’s SCA must rethink their value architecture across three layers — data, logic, and experience — or face exclusion from the Agentic Economy.

STRUCTURED DATA VS UNSTRUCTURED DATA

Structured data uses a spreadsheet-like format that machines read with clarity and speed. AI agents, regulators, and customers need to begin with high-trust data, or the agentic economy doesn’t work.

We understand that spreadsheets have clear context, structure, and meaning. The thing we miss is that data formats use titles, rows, and fields to map chaos, which determines whether we capture the messy physical reality of work, culture, and daily life. Legacy ERP and Ethereum-style systems use JSON/JSON-RPC to capture transactions. JSON-LD captures life.

Unruly. Illogical. Beautiful. Machines can only search, group, and analyze work once the data has structure. JSON and JSON-RPC capture tidy agreements. But work demands the facts of who did what, where, when, under what conditions, with which materials, and why these details matter. Fashion left work in the dark by choosing JSON and JSON-RPC. In Italy, this gap hid the unauthorized workshops, labor violations, and subcontracting chains now under investigation—and explains the scandal.

In 2026, manufacturers, brands, retailers, and people enter a new era shaped by climate regulations, blockchains, AI, customer expectations, and automation. AI presents significant market opportunities. It also builds a dangerous Iron Stool of capital, data, and LLMs that hyper-centralizes market power, creates durable inequality, and increases distance from power that current policy and business strategy do not discuss. Uncountered AI shoplifts agency and margin. To keep what is ours, sign your work.

Distance from power is a useful lens for how consolidation works. Technology extracts rents by controlling facts, terms, and economic/ecosystem relationships that reinforce a firm’s advantages. In other words, centralized control increases the distance between value creation and market power.

Technology platforms and incumbent firms built Sustainable Competitive Advantage by controlling facts and relationships that separate value creation from trust. The new advantage comes from collapsing that distance. Signed data graphs at the point of value creation unlock the $5 trillion agentic commerce economy, lower costs and risk, let makers and communities keep more of the value they create, and introduce mathematical liability that constrains centralized AI.

Cultural, economic, and information asymmetries create hard-to-dislodge advantages. The AI-fused Iron Stool form a natural oligopoly of consolidated asymmetries that multiply imbalances to lock in high returns. The Iron Stool uses data advantages to manipulate markets, set prices, control customers, and write the rules for everyone.

We focus on AI absorbing tasks and jobs. The real risk is the consolidation of structural power that locks platform advantages in place. Unchecked AI freezes today’s structural hierarchy, limits social mobility, and suppresses growth in the real economy. It surrenders future development and value creation to terms set by a few data-rich monopolies.

Markets already price AI as a permanent concentration of structural economic power that lets a few winners absorb the business and personal agency of the rest. Venture capital sees this future and prices it with crazy-high valuations. These high-stakes conversations do not reach the broader public or policy debate. “Sign your work” changes that.

The Strategy | Sign Your Work

The structural response to an Iron Stool of capital, data and AI is to disrupt incumbents by moving the source of truth and sustainable competitive advantage closer to value creation. Put simply, sign your work. The strength of a firm’s new SCA is inversely proportional to the distance between trust and value creation. In this new environment the shift from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0 and Industry 4.0 inverts the structure of competitive power.

Stop AI Shoplifting

Signed, permissioned, product, event, and measurement data graphs introduce mathematical liability to LLMs. They bind origin, provenance, permissions, and value flows into equations that constrain how AI plans, acts, and extracts value. In other words, signing your work exposes AI shoplifting.

Relocating trust embeds real-time work into signed data chains at the point of value creation. These chains document who did what, when, where, and under which standards work happened. This fusion of work and trusted, permissioned information moves trust closer to value creation. This all-in-one structural move strengthens bargaining power, yanks data authority back from centralized AI, and compensates people who create value in the real economy.

New technologies reset bottlenecks and scarcity: capital > attention > control and extraction > trust.

Advantage now comes from signed, permissioned product, event, and measurement facts that agents, regulators, and customers can act on.

The new scarce thing is high-integrity, atomic-level truth.

There is a remarkable, new interrelationship between legislation and technology that rewrites the manufacturing rules of value. In regulated markets, new legislation requires documented product and supply chain data. At the same time, new digital infrastructure makes it cheap to turn those obligations into trustworthy, machine-readable facts.

This post explores an open-source, commons infrastructure for making. In about 50 San Francisco Tech Week conversations, only two people knew what the heck I was talking about. Here’s hoping this helps solve my marketing problem.

Small businesses and non-profits ignore Digital Public Infrastructure, and the new agentic business models it creates—at their own risk. The new symbiosis between legal compliance and technology generates rivers of new data that dissolve competitive moats by transforming the field of competition from speculative marketing claims towards factual product histories. Smart players will recognize that this data will transform manufacturing projections into real-time signals that activate Digital Public Infrastructure and shared, asset-lite, pull, making ecosystems.

The Mechanism

It is wrongheaded to treat fashion supply chain compliance mandates, especially digital traceability, purely as cost, burden, and complexity. The interrelationship of legislation and the technology required to comply drives the creation of trustworthy, signed data graphs (also known as digital product passports), initiates operational savings, and unlocks a (projected) $5 trillion agentic commerce opportunity. Tracing and compliance efforts are strategic levers for capturing a share of this new agentic market. We are moving beyond “technology is a tool” to “technology is the structure of the economy.

The Opportunity

What would manufacturing look like if ethical, Digital Public Infrastructure systems used the data generated by climate legislation to automate low value work—to reason, plan, and act on without human interventions? The Digital Public Infrastructure data is what AI agents use to orchestrate $3 trillion to $5 trillion in global retail revenue by 2030, in normal adoption scenarios. These agents only read JSON-LD structured data, not brand claims.

Manufacturers face three stark choices to solve the Information Asymmetry Tax:

1) Pay the Tax The short-term, high risk / high-cost choice. Continue operating on static, unverified marketing claims. Risk: Remain invisible to AI agents, bleed margin on overproduction, and face regulatory fines.

2) The Comprehensive Overhaul This is a false choice for long-term, high risk / high capital transformation. I call this a false choice because it only applies if you re-choose centralized, extractive, on-chain technologies . If you rip and replace legacy systems with new, centralized ERP blockchains written in JSON and JSON-RPC, you are likely choosing high sunk costs, high failure rates and years of delay.

3) The “Commons” Option This is an iterative, low risk, self-directed, open-source choice to build shared, Digital Public Infrastructure that works for owners, investors, consumers and the planet. This new approach creates a “Commons” for trade where value stays with creators and communities by aligning interests, sovereignty, and verifications across the value chain.

Let’s Restate the Problem

Fashion pays an Information Asymmetry Tax: projected demand, unsupported marketing claims, and expensive, inflexible centralized tech stacks that AI agents cannot trust.

What Open-Source, Digital Public Infrastructure Can Do

• Turn ethical integrity costs into revenue by lowering risk for buyers, lenders, and insurers; unlocking premium AI product discovery; creating new financial products (e.g., fractional ownership, carbon derivatives) built on signed product, event, and climate data.

• Move inventory, stock-outs, and operating costs in your favor by replacing speculation with granular, real-time demand flows that tracing generates.

• Manage regulatory compliance and brand risk with signed product, event, and measurement data needed to meet mandatory EU/California/global compliance standards.

• Collaborative development at ongoing events reduces strategic and tech debt, field tests UI, UX, and product–market fit faster and at lower cost, engages smallholders and partners, creates network effects, and aligns value chain ecosystems before legislative deadlines trigger catch-up projects.

• Position your brand on the right side of geopolitical shifts as technology and manufacturing move from centralized, extractive models to distributed, signed production. Move early to align value and advantage around trusted data and open participation.

• Build simple, coordinated systems of work that let agents and machines reason, plan, and act—and lay the groundwork for autonomous manufacturing.

The Shift: A Four-Step Path to Commons Technology and Competitive Advantage

Manufacturing is facing generational change. To manage risk, fashion should reach for clarity and incremental change. Verification is scarce today, but in regulated markets, signed data graphs (like product passports) become abundant as compliance compels trustworthy, machine-readable product data.

Many firms are bolting tracing onto legacy systems, which I predict will cause massive sunk costs in the EU. Specifically, centralized blockchain solutions designed for financial transactions lack the scale, data sovereignty and Global South usability necessary to comply with the granular traceability requirements of EU/California legislation.

More, JSON and JSON-RPC code choices will never meet the letter or spirit of EU/California legislation.

In low-trust environments, brands self-audit truth. Close the trust loop by leveraging ambient trust to focus on market differentiation through storytelling and experiences. Value Innovation is achieved by simultaneously pursuing differentiation and low costs that make competition irrelevant, while Brand Curation uses the new trustworthy data to drive differentiation through storytelling and experiences. Invest resources in storytelling and experiences that capture the Emotional Premium. Achieve operational cost leadership while compounding gains through narrative differentiation.

Make Commons More Common

Manufacturing is facing two invisible disruptions at once. Regulatory waves in the EU and California, demand proof for climate and marketing claims . Meanwhile, AI forces brands to compete on trust, at a moment when neither brands nor AI agents have reliable data.

The lack of universal, machine-readable standards and schemas for product identity, provenance, events, and measurement breaks interoperability and impedes Web 3.0 and Industry 4.0. Without this work, advanced manufacturing lags, strategic autonomy weakens, social transformation stalls, LLMs underperform, cross-border trade slows, the climate transition fails, dark factories win, and bad actors gain ground.

The lack of interoperability perpetuates the dominance of aggregators and state-controlled industries which impacts governments, public companies, consumers, and smallholders in both formal and informal economies. Fractured standards weaken critical supply chain integrity, technological competitiveness, sanctions enforcement, and other dimensions of national security and critical national infrastructure. The absence of standards for Agent-2-Agent and other frontier interactions introduce cascading unpredictability, risk, and failure.

For example, Australia’s Scope 3 tracing laws don’t map to the EU’s ESPR regulations for Digital Product Passports / Textile DPPs or textile waste regulations. In California, the absence of community-driven standards means that industry is stepping in with captured circularity and interoperability standards that could meet some of the legal requirements while kneecapping climate progress for a technology generation.

Lots of foundational work has been done on circularity and standards, but it’s unusable if it remains locked in PDFs and siloed projects. The EU identifies JSON-LD as the governing standard, but no one has activated product, event, or climate measurement schemas at Schema.org, a W3.org partner. We need industry-specific standards that bring the real economy on-chain.

Landscape Changes Quicken Network Effects

Forcing Mechanism 1: Global sustainability regulations now account for approximately 30% of global GDP.
Forcing Mechanism 2: AI product sales reward robust product and event data with higher discovery. This creates economic incentives for tracing the climate impact of supply chains.

Why Standards and Structured Data Matter

Structured data is the only way to meet California’s SB 253, SB 261, the EU’s Digital Product Passports, and other climate transition laws. Embedding work, process, and measurement in interoperable product and event histories unlocks what has been unseen and undervalued. These product histories, called data graphs, correct past mistakes by making informal economies visible, preserving intangible culture, and rewarding individual contributions. Interoperable structured data favors creators over controllers and creates ecosystem competitive advantage. When interoperability fails, projects stall, trade slows, costs rise, transitions collapse, and extractive incumbents keep their moats. Bottom-up legitimacy is the only viable path to global-scale interoperability.

Without global standards, industries remain fragmented, and US firms won’t lead Web 3.0 or Industry 4.0. Instead, state-driven competitors in the EU and Asia will define global interoperability rules and capture the majority of trade data. We lack solid foundations because earlier standards, such as WTO HS codes, shopping taxonomies, and schema.org, excluded millions, ignored informal economies, and froze data at a coarse level. Interoperable product, climate, social, and security data are the unlock. Early standards are sticky in winner-takes-all stakes. Bad standards are already gaining adoption.

Develop interoperable W3.org measurement and data standards, along with associated schemas, built bottom-up to work at both Global South and Global North scales. These open standards connect on-chain systems to the real economy, link smallholders, work, industry, and governments in one framework. The three recommended products (screenshot attached) seem a little random, so I asked how Perplexity arrived at the recommendations and got noise. I asked directly, "I'm asking about your specific product recommendations. Not the general questions you are answering.

Is it because Walmart and Adorama use structured data? Or...how did Perplexity select them for my discovery?"

How Perplexity Chooses Product Recommendations

Structured Data Improves Discovery:

Perplexity's AI uses information provided by retailers in structured data formats (such as product feeds, schema markup, inventory APIs, etc.). This structured data allows Perplexity to accurately index, compare, and display products with relevant details—like name, price, stock, and features—directly in response to your query. Structured listings from large retailers (Walmart, Adorama, Best Buy, etc.) are more likely to appear because their websites often supply complete, up-to-date information in this format. This increases their visibility in the product search123.

Unbiased, Query-Driven Selection:

Perplexity does not rank or recommend products just because of the retailer or a sponsored position. The AI scans its indexed sources for listings that match your search—for example, "wireless lavalier microphone." It evaluates options based on data quality, relevance, pricing, and availability, using both structured feeds and website metadata. More robust product data leads to more frequent selection and clearer product display245.

Integration With Shopping Platforms:

Perplexity now integrates with platforms like Shopify and other major online sellers in the U.S., so you'll see product cards and purchase links from those sellers. The platform also allows direct checkout ("Buy with Pro") for seamless purchases from select retailers, but these features do not bias the search—relevance to the query remains primary24.

No Direct Retailer Sponsorship:

According to both public statements and internal documentation, Perplexity's product cards are not sponsored advertisements. They are generated from AI-driven analysis of available retail data within its index, presenting what is algorithmically determined to be most relevant and useful for your search25.

Summary:

Perplexity's product recommendations appear the way they do because some sellers (like Walmart and Adorama) provide structured, accessible, and reliable product information that the AI can process efficiently. No retailer is given preferential treatment, but those with better data have greater visibility. Selections are not handpicked or paid for; they reflect an algorithmic match between your search and the most informationally complete items in the index1254.

I pushed again about whether the company would earn on my purchase and got sort of an answer:

Regarding the specific products I recommended (like those from Walmart, Adorama, and similar retailers), I do not have direct visibility into whether those exact listings earn affiliate fees for Perplexity. Perplexity's product recommendations come from various merchant feeds and retail integrations, and some of those may participate in affiliate or revenue-sharing programs, but this is handled at the merchant or platform level rather than tied to individual products in a publicly disclosed way.

And, so it begins!

Granularity reveals informal value networks beyond a brand’s products, workers, operations, and supply chains. When farmers, weavers—even machines or techniques—record time-stamped transactions, they lay the foundation for bottom-up emissions reporting, microtransaction accounting, and fairer payment.

These detailed records—capturing mutual consent, transfers, and payment flows across each step of the value chain—make small economic units profitable and traceable, from farmer to processor, manufacturer to brand, and brand to customer or recycler. Consequently, this infrastructure enables accurate Scope 3 calculations, links real contributions to accountable climate action and blockchains-for-money, and allows Global South raw materials and labor to be valued fairly—something centralized systems have never achieved. Importantly, Smart contracts and structural protocols that recognize this full chain of value let creators claim a fairer share. This is the core mechanism by which decentralization shifts power from value controllers to value creators. Peer-to-peer consent ensures no single party can impose unfair terms.

At the same time, these systems produce rich product data that delights customers and creates sustainable competitive advantage for LLMs and AI-driven commerce. This means companies can now monetize individual uses, repairs, or contributions previously too small to track or charge for—expanding the universe of goods and services that can be bought, sold, and incentivized, and enabling entirely new business models.

These systems operate not through centralized control or pure market dynamics, but through a commons-based logic: structuring coordination, ownership, and rewards around shared stewardship and open participation.

Only distributed ledgers using JSON-LD can track origin data from the bottom up—capturing when and where work is accurately documented.

This enables synchronized processing at scale: distributed actors can collaboratively record, account for, and settle transactions across systems.

New capabilities include traceable microtransactions, mutual credit, and on-chain attribution of value—especially relevant for climate justice, biodiversity, and Global South contexts.

This reflects a shift toward commons logic: structuring systems around shared ownership, collective stewardship, and open participation—rather than centralized control or pure market logic.

Digital Transactions and Accounting Flows

Unlike double-entry bookkeeping, REA and ValueFlows are accounting for the digital age. They represent digital flows of real economic activity as linked resources, events, and agents, rather than unsophisticated ledger entries. They capture what actually happens. Who did what? With what resources? When? And, why? This produces granular, transparent, and flexible accounting, especially when tracking multi-party collaboration or complex, cross-organizational value chains.

Instead of fragmented, siloed subsystems, REA organizes everything around value-producing actions and the agents involved. This structure fits decentralized platforms, federated networks, and digital marketplaces.

Built for collaboration and adaptability, REA is well-suited for tracing supply chains because it maps directly onto web-native formats like JSON-LD, which can encode flows in structured, machine-readable, and verifiable ways that are visible across legal boundaries without surrendering control. This is crucial for supply chains, cooperatives, and climate accounting.

AI Wants This

REA enables semantic clarity to represent relationships, transactions, and responsibilities in a shared JSON-LD code. By mirroring how economic activity works in the real world, we can connect the real economy to on-chain systems.

In my view, these flat-data models are incompatible with current legislation and ethically problematic in the Global South. Only W3C’s JSON-LD linked data architecture supports the legislated Grounded Theory Methodology (GTM), enables climate impact tracing across diverse and informal supply chains, and remains flexible enough for emergent markets.

These structural transformations present brands with a binary choice. Brands built on open systems have challenges maintaining incumbent advantages, but they are also inherently more robust.

In the future, ethical practices may become more profitable than taking reputational risks. Brands that recognize this shift will build systems that simultaneously capture AI search sales rewards, together with operational automations that delight customers. Yesterday's playbook competes against an entirely different economic model. Now, openness drives profitability. Collaboration becomes the competitive moat.

Ethereum uses JSON-RPC, which is best suited for use cases that focus on money, ownership, and value, such as transferring, programming, and executing assets.

In contrast, JSON-LD use cases center on work—the context, meaning, relationships, and industry knowledge that enable systems to cooperate and interoperate in informal networks, multi-party workflows, and semantic knowledge about goods, identities, and processes at any scale.

Blockchain tracing tools built primarily on JSON-RPC and Ethereum/Solana protocols are designed to track and interact with value transfers, transactions, and blockchain state at a technical level. Put simply, they were created for money and commands, specifically to comply with global crypto regulations.

Ethereum/Solana core protocols cannot match the capabilities of JSON-LD for semantic understanding and interoperability without the use of middleware, external domain knowledge systems, or translation layers.

The ESPR requires "ground-up methodology" for DPPs. JSON-LD can record semantically rich information for any structured entity or relationship. "Linked Data" provides the semantic richness and flexibility. In other words, it is designed for work and community.

GS1 appears to have made short-term choices that don't meet the Grounded Theory Methodology legislative requirements. The tools seem to be a mismatch for everyone except the largest firms.

The EU's Digital Product Passport (DPP) approach utilizes GS1 Digital Link URIs, which are not full W3C semantic web standards, but enable decentralized access to product data.

The EU and GS1 prioritize deployable, scalable solutions across diverse industries over strict adherence to W3C standards for semantic interoperability.

The ESPR legislation does not currently include a detailed plan for semantic richness or uniform data modeling.

GS1 Digital Link URIs enable decentralized, web-resolvable product identification with data hosted by multiple stakeholders rather than centralized storage.

While JSON-LD and other semantic standards may be adopted later, GS1's approach does not currently mandate them, which could pose long-term interoperability challenges.

Schema.org is the W3C-affiliated working group that publishes standard data structures. You can verify conclusions and that W3C approved code includes: JSON-LD, Google Microdata, and RDFa.

How I got here

I'm an accidental researcher. Six years ago, I began analyzing how to repair India’s broken craft sector. The middle was research into Global South-friendly blockchains and Digital Product Passports. The endpoint came in June–July 2025, when AI news makes JSON-LD the end-to-end backbone of product creation, transformation, marketing compliance, and trust for what we buy, wear, repair, and circulate.

The missing piece was the announcement of nine new AI browsers set to compete with Google Chrome and Gemini. This confirmed earlier signals that large language models would sell products agentically. The shift from Web2 to Web3 makes one thing clear: agentic search and sales depend on high-quality, machine-readable product data, which means products must become understandable to both people and machines. JSON-LD is the native way to create this, “semantic clarity.” Being understandable to both machines and people is now essential for online sales, circular economies, strategic advantage, and market differentiation. A single source of truth is the quality way to coordinate fragmented workflows and record a product’s living history.

Track Climate Impact & Ensure Compliance

JSON-LD tracks materials, labor, transformations, and environmental impacts (e.g., carbon, water, deforestation) across product lifecycles. It enables global compliance, real-time transparency, and builds a product’s living history.

Note: I use the term “living history” to describe a product’s full lifecycle—from seed to store to recycling bin. It can include cultural context and contributions from everyone who touched the product.

How it Works

Functionally, the newness of blockchains and distributed networks can track and coordinate resources, transformations, and agent contributions at a granular level across networks. This allows people, organizations, machines, and autonomous software (Agents) to have their contributions measured and priced individually. This means the system itself can structure, price, and amplify contributions, transformations, and relationships thereby distributing value beyond a firm's employees, products, or controlled supply chains.

A granular understanding of climate and economic ecosystems reshapes business strategy by shifting where value is created, how coordination happens, trust is built, and which strategies can scale. A Binary Choice

The new rules for AI brand identity—with policy and legal foundations already established—create a binary. Two choices: 1) Either brand identity remains based on self-declared claims. Or, 2) Products send semantic quality signals understandable to both people and machines, from traced product histories. In Web3, technical architecture and semantic product code define brand promises, story, and become the primary forms of differentiation.

The New Customer

Semantic clarity may also bring new feelings. I think we'll transition from traditional marketing—what I can only call vibes marketing—to trust-based marketing. When producers can't verify quality or compliance, their work is treated as interchangeable, even when it's exceptional. Failure to signal quality causes markets to fail because entrenched interests exploit the information mismatch. Distributed infrastructure closes that gap.

Daily interactions on a level playing field bubble up as positive change. This is how systems transform. When quality matters, systems interoperate and coordinate, thereby increasing bargaining power. Absent bottom-up maker participation, how will India's weavers, a sector I care a lot about, compete with global giants, data pipelines and machine-learning filters they can't even see? CLARITY STRATEGY

The World Wide Web Consortium

In 1994, Tim Berners-Lee founded the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) at MIT to create standards for the Web that keep it open, interoperable, and usable by everyone. Academic institutions, governments, advocacy groups, independent experts, and major tech companies work by consensus to ensure it functions across abilities, devices, and regions.

RDF

In 1999, the W3C developed Resource Description Framework (RDF) as an interoperable standard that could describe and organize anything on the Web. RDF gives unrelated things (music metadata, bioscience, e-commerce, regulatory reporting…whatever) a shared grammar that helps machines understand content in its real-world context. RDF standardized frameworks for expressing relationships—like, "Paris (subject) is a city (predicate) in France (object)". RDF's data interoperability, schema flexibility, and semantic expressiveness are the ongoing foundation of sophisticated AI information services. JSON-LD writes RDF.

JSON-LD

JSON is a broadly adopted data structure that standardized in October 2013. The W3C published JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data) in 2014, which is a format for structuring linked data by writing RDF statements in JSON and assigning each element a unique URL. This structure links data across the Internet so browsers, social platforms, and AI agents can automatically understand relationships and context. JSON-LD combines the virtues of simple data formats and the rich, connected data that AI needs to deliver advanced capabilities.

You can engage directly with Web3's domains of blockchains, blockchain-like services, Artificial Intelligence, and autonomous Agents, which work without direct human intervention. However, most of the things you'll want to do in Web3 will combine several domains. The Fediverse is where we will interact with hybrid services. Marketing and PR pros care because this is where audiences will hear about your brand organically, for interactions that follow.

Why the Fediverse Matters

Working in the Fediverse gives you greater message control and new forms of customer interaction to build awareness, engagement, and community—beyond the limits of centralized platforms. If you have ever sent an email that saw an em dash convert into a hyphen, changing the nuance of your sentence. Or, had the wrong photo and language picked up from a web link, then you have experience with what the Fediverse corrects.

More Power. Less Findability.

The Web3 movement shifts power by restoring control to users—reclaiming agency from Big Tech's corporate-driven tools. The Fediverse counters Web2's algorithmic manipulation and ad-driven visibility models. This marks a fundamental change in how digital spaces are structured and how brands engage with audiences. So, how will marketers respond when people have more choice, voice, and control over their digital lives? When algorithmic manipulation and advertising stop working?

Marketing and PR pros will need to find new ways to engage audiences that prioritize stakeholder value over corporate shareholders. There will still be advertisements. And, there will be countless Agentic operations that optimize for something. However, the only way I see to overcome fragmentation is to earn your place in communities and create things people will want to share.

A Shaggy Dog Story

Did you hear the one about a Casino, a Commons, and a Curator who met on a Concourse? The Casino took bets. The Commons wanted everyone to work together. The Curator created new experiences. And the Concourse just wanted to keep traffic moving.

What this lacks in humor, it gains in explaining the new Internet's unique, collaborative spaces.

The Casino, Commons, Curator and Fediverse

Back in the day, centralized databases made sense for delivering consistent, efficient Internet services and easy data management. As these platforms grew, however, centralization enabled corporate capture. Big Tech amassed troves of user data, created walled gardens that locked in users, and monetized attention through targeted ads and engagement-optimizing algorithms. The Internet's incentives and ethos shifted from openness to extraction. Technology responded with people-and-community-first alternatives.

Technology Responds

Picture the Web3 Internet as a three-legged table, where each (Casino, Commons, Curator) leg is its own tech ecosystem. The legs sub-divide into infrastructure and Agent zones; these connect to a Fediverse tabletop that coordinates identity, data, and value. Some campaigns and services exist only in the Casino, Commons, and Curator. Hybrid services meet audiences in the decentralized Fediverse Concourse.

The Casino

I call the speculative, high-volatility world of crypto and NFTs, The Casino. This is where Web3's built-in transaction trust and direct control let people bet on new forms of value. The Casino runs on blockchains, smart contracts and on-chain agents that settle transactions—without human intervention. Though often tied to higher risk, The Casino gives marketers powerful new tools like loyalty NFTs, token transfers, programmable payments, automated promotions and micro incentives to reward specific audience behaviors.

The Commons

The Commons table leg is a blockchained shared-brain for communities and the public good. The Commons works on shared infrastructure (Digital Public Goods), shared knowledge, and other pro-social services. Commons communities self-determine their group's values, standards and governance. The challenge for marketing and PR pros will be how to build brand affinity within communities that manage their own digital ethos. Brand success here means opportunities for deeper trust and truly authentic brand relationships based on shared values.

The Curator

I call AI and algorithmic systems The Curator because these services filter, personalize, and optimize digital experiences. The Curator is our table diagram's intelligence and discovery layer, designed to help users find relevant content, connect with others, and enable sophisticated automated tasks. The Curator can use autonomous, multi agent AI systems to help audiences discover, connect communicate and acquire. For marketing and PR pros, the Curator spots trends, filters your brand's content to receptive audiences and powers conversational agents for real time engagement.

The Functional Fediverse

JSON-LD is an open standard that preserves consistent meaning across the Internet. JSON is a widely used programming code that organizes information and uses interoperability to glue together collective efforts. The "LD" in JSON-LD stands for "Linked Data," which means the data connects to universal, standard definitions that help apps and websites understand context and details. JSON-LD can be directly converted into RDF (Resource Description Framework), the universal web standard for structured data and the lingua franca of Internet communications. This allows things like posts, likes, events, smart contract actions, or AI messages to use the same fields and meanings across the Fediverse, ensuring clear and consistent communication everywhere. These standards live on Schema.org.

What this means specifically for marketing and PR pros

Reliable Information Spread

When you share information (like a press release, an event, a product announcement), JSON-LD ensures the key data (headline, date, links, location, price, etc.) are consistently identified and understood anywhere in the Fediverse. In other words, JSON-LD encures your messages maintain integrity as they spread.

Seamless Automation

Fediverse standards underpin automated message sharing, for consistency everywhere.

Better Measurement and Analytics

Consistent measurement in the Fediverse means gathering data from many different servers (places), not just one centralized dashboard. Thanks to JSON-LD's open standards, performance, engagement, and mention data are structured the same way everywhere.

This means you can get faster, more reliable insights, spot trends earlier, and measure campaign success more effectively. Standardized, structured data doesn't just speed up analytics, it makes your marketing tools more flexible, your insights more actionable, and your team more efficient. Consistent, clean data is impossible across today's separate, proprietary platforms. The Fediverse should be a big boost to measurement and analytics.

Universal Standards and Why They Matter

ActivityPub uses JSON-LD to create the Web3 Consortium's standardized communication protocols. These standards determine how messages and activities are delivered, subscribed to, replied to, and acted upon. The problem with the old Internet was not enough good information. The problem today is too much good information. The only way to manage massive amounts of information and ensure consistent meaning everywhere is to use tructured data pervasively. Consistent, structured data unlocks powerful collaborations and network effects.

Standards create a robust, interoperable, and intelligently connected environment in which people and brands build genuine connections. Creating connections and value is how your message travels further and can engage audiences without the limitations of centralized platforms.

By treating the Fediverse as both a meeting place—and a strategic channel, you replace fragmented services with a unified protocol that automates business, sales, and operations. You'll maintain consistent messaging, unlock network effects across Web3, and wield a powerful lever for the new goals of brand authenticity, community-driven growth, and privacy-first marketing.

What This Means to Marketing, PR, and Brands

Recent history explains why the old attention playbook is losing relevance. Centralized databases used to make sense. They made the Internet consistent, efficient, and easy to manage. That worked until Big Tech used centralization to capture the Internet. The corporate Internet built walled gardens, harvested user data, and locked us into closed ecosystems. They monetized attention through algorithmic churn, interruption and advertising burn. For marketers and PR professionals, the old playbook meant learning to play by the platforms' rules: Buy ads. Optimize content for algorithms. Compete for attention even if it weakens your brand in other ways. Personally, I hate what the Intenet has become.

The Fediverse and the broader Web3 movement are direct responses to the messed-up incentives and excesses of Web2. Web3 offers a vision of the Internet where users own their data, communities set the rules that govern them, and open protocols enable real interoperability. Fediverse engagement means brands have to earn your attention and regard. Nothing is captive. No shortcuts.

The New Playbook: From Churn and Burn to Earn

Where does visibility come from, if not from advertising and pleasing algorithms? If businesses need sales to thrive, how will customers find and buy branded goods? The Internet is moving from closed, corporate-controlled platforms to open, user-governed networks. Marketers and PR professionals will want to shift from algorithm-chasing and ad-buying to authentic engagement, community participation, and transparent value creation.

The Web2>Web3 transition starts with showing up, contributing, and listening—grassroots engagement, open collaboration, and trust-building—so new forms of marketing and PR can emerge. The Fediverse isn't just a new set of tools—it's a new philosophy for digital interaction.

The new reality is this: the most successful brands will embed themselves in communities authentically, contribute real value, and adapt to transparent, participatory digital ecosystems. That means creating interactions that earn your audience's attention and regard.

What can brands do? Cleaning up the past is a good start. Dior addressed vulnerabilities from Web3's transparency and 2-way customer communications by celebrating the design and making skills of Mumbai's Chanakya atelier, that had gone unrecognized previously.

The Aura Blockchain Consortium is taking a different strategic approach. Their system meets new disclosure regulations by opening up just enough, while keeping strategic closedness that preserves legacy brand advantages as long as possible.

Web3 Restores Parity Through Bargaining Power

Parity means equality—in power, status, or share—and it's the foundation of a level playing field. Platforms, buyers, and institutions used to control the rules. Web3 changes legacy advantages by embedding greater individual choice throughout the economy. On-chain, you will be able to walk away from business and personal relationships that no longer serve you. You can duplicate current technology services and “fork” into new communities that create value on terms you set. Put simply, Web3 delivers bargaining power parity. Parity means a level playing field, which is how systems finally start working better for people who create value, and less well for those who control or distribute value.

Web3 Rewards Value Creation, Not Attention Capture

In Web2, outrage and disruption win attention, likes and engagement. In Web3, reputation and regard arise from what you build, contribute, or solve—and treat others—not how loud you are. What does online look like when destructive advantages dissolve? When incentives shift from destruction to value creation? From rewards to be a jerk, to rewards for being useful? One change is that trolls won't get likes and TV contracts—they’ll get voted off the island.

Web3 Embeds Ethics and the Consent of the Governed

Web3 systems reward coordination over control—and cooperation over coercion. Today, platforms change the rules without asking. In the future—you’ll give consent to change even the smallest of things. Permissions move us from unilateral platform rule to transparent consent of the governed. Think of the change as Terms and Conditions you co-author.

Incentives. Ethics. Responsibilities.

What happens when your identity, data, assets, and work can move with you? How do incentives and bargaining power shift when you can walk away and start something new—without losing what you’ve built? These possibilities are the antidote for dismay.

Systems designed to keep promises—around people, data, and money—will change the world, especially for very poor people who live with fragility, unpredictability, and structural unreliability. Vague, unenforceable promises will become reliable agreements, which means most of us will prefer to work on-chain. If a smart contract promises that when A happens, B transacts—it does.

Incentives change when everyone has parity power, transparent rights, and plays by the same rules—rules that can’t be changed without the consent of the governed. When outcomes are consistent, rights are enforceable, and systems can’t be rigged, exploitation incentives dissolve. Web3 creates a different world.

On-chain Rights and Owning Your Value

Clarification: The following are true for Digital Public Infrastructure and technologies like Holochain. Not every right here will attach to Ethereum and some other types of blockchains.

One. Control Your Money

Zero gatekeepers. Your assets can’t be frozen, seized, reversed, manipulated or de-banked.

What it means: Because you’ll control on-chain assets directly, transactions no longer require banks, brokers, or middlemen. On-chain systems let you trade and access global markets without asking permission from anyone other than maybe, your customers. Removing traditional trust mechanisms lowers costs, increases efficiency, and unlocks trapped value.

Why it’s powerful: Your assets can’t be frozen, seized, or reversed. Transactions are transparent and hard to manipulate. You can’t be de-banked.

The tradeoff: Transactions are programmed to execute automatically. You’re responsible for your cryptographic key. Lose it, and you lose access to your assets. There’s no reset, no one to call, no recovery.

Two. A Private Digital Life

Decentralized networks create privacy, safety and resilience by neutering algorithms and surveillance capitalism.

Privacy and control are possible now because Web3 systems run on decentralized protocols. Decentralization means that services operate on servers distributed across multiple countries and devices, reducing reliance on any single point of control. In practice, distributed computation spreads across regions and devices so services keep running—even if there are regional disasters or other disruptions. The most decentralized, lowest cost tech uses the spare computing power of community phones and laptops.

There are lots of reasons to prefer decentralized networks, but the two most important are privacy and resilience. The Telegram messaging app decentralized to resist censorship. When Russia tried to block Telegram in 2018, the company used decentralization evasively. Even with extreme measures—like blocking large swaths of the internet—Russia couldn’t completely shut down Telegram.

When technology experts say "no single authority controls your services," they mean you’re not forced through a centralized platform that can control what you see, block what you say, cut off your access, censor your speech, restrict your participation, or monitor your behavior. Protocol systems that avoid those chokepoints keep power with users—and make state-sponsored surveillance and disinformation much harder to carry out.

What it means: Your online activity and personal data stay private. You decide who has access—and you can revoke that access at any time.

Why it matters: Strong privacy blocks authoritarian drift, surveillance capitalism, and algorithmic control. It becomes much, much harder to steal, coerce, or manipulate your health, identity, or financial data.

Example: Recent legal changes in the US around bodily autonomy caused many women of childbearing age to stop wearing health monitors. Why? Almost any centralized health record is not private. Cirdia is a privacy-first wearable that stores health data in a decentralized way, across the devices you already use

In practice that means breaking health data into small pieces—called shards, that sit on the phones and laptops in your network. To access decentralized health data, a legal proceeding would have to subpoena multiple people in your network, and even then, health records would be difficult to reassemble without your explicit consent.

Three. Speak Your Mind

In decentralized systems, community standards matter, but gatekeepers don’t.

In decentralized systems, speech doesn’t flow through gatekeepers. The rules are transparent. Moderation is community-based. You can speak your mind, but you won't have to look at algorithmic content optimized for the worst in us. The incentives for yelling, performance and fake outrage quiet down.

Why it matters:

• You can’t be shadow-banned or silenced without a community-agreed process.

• Moderation happens in the open, under rules you know.

• You'll choose the communities you join based, in part, on how they self-govern.

• Your identity and content move with you—across platforms and communities, which means you can go anywhere life takes you.

• Your contributions persist. Leaving a platform doesn’t mean starting over.

Four. Unlock Lock-In

Move your data, connections, and value anywhere.

In Web2, Big Tech built walled gardens—trapping users inside closed ecosystems to maximize shareholder value. Leaving meant starting over and losing your data, connections, and the value of your contributions. Web3 breaks that pattern. It dissolves lock-in and restores self-ownership and control.

Ownership and Portability

In Web3, the economic value of your online activity—your data, assets, work, identity, and connections—belongs to you. You can move your property anywhere.

Self-ownership and the right to exit dissolve both technical and social barriers. We’ve already seen the effects in the migration from X to Bluesky. Open systems like Bluesky engender the remergence of trust in relationships.

Dissolving Moats with Open Standards

Decentralized protocols break down the barriers that trapped users on centralized platforms. Open standards allow data and value to move freely between apps and networks. This means users can choose better tools without losing their digital lives. It also means developers can build without paying high platform access fees.

The Fediverse

The Fediverse is a growing ecosystem of platforms that "talk" to each other via open protocols. Think of the Fediverse like email: Open standards let you send messages from Gmail to Yahoo and Outlook. No one owns the system, but everyone can use it. Your identity, content, and connections move freely—anywhere that fits your values. Communities can control their memberships, but anything that is potentially controversial is governed democratically.

Protocols Replace Platforms

For example, Holochain is a protocol network that handles freedom and control a little differently. Unlike systems that put everything on a public ledger, Holochain is controlled by you directly, on your phone. It is like having your own secure digital space where you decide exactly what to share and with whom.

Five. Self-Direction and Federated Freedom

Move between platforms, communities, services—anywhere that reflects your values.

What it means: Your digital life—identity, creations, connections, and assets—lives (federates) inside a network of independently operated, interconnected spaces, called the Fediverse. Federated architecture lets you move freely between platforms, communities and services that reflect your values.

How Federation unlocks control:

• Federated models don’t lock you into any long-term obligations. You own your relationships and creations. If federation partnerships no longer align with your values, you can go elsewhere and take your digital life with you.

• "Exit" becomes a powerful form of leverage and negotiation that lets you bargain for better. Bargaining power moves away from extraction models by driving your ecosystem to create community value.

• In the Fediverse, open protocols mean freedom, and freedome fuels connection. Interoperability turns fragmentation into flow—and gives people control over how and where their digital lives unfold.

• Federation helps you find your people. It lets you build your own digital ecosystem, aligned with your values and grounded in earned trust. The result is a self-directed online life—not controlled by centralized platforms.

Six. The Right to Enhanced Agency

Parity becomes power when you move through digital systems freely and fairly.

You become a potent economic agent when you can move through digital systems without losing your assets, reputation, social standing, or data. Parity is power.

You can act, negotiate, and participate as an equal—across networks, sectors, and borders. Customers will still want things from you. But if you work in value chains, Web3’s structure means you can claim a greater share of your work’s value. When your contributions are no longer locked to a single platform or controlled by intermediaries, your value travels with you. So does your leverage. Enhanced agency expands your ability to create, prosper, and bargain on fair terms.

Why it matters: Interoperability means everything moves freely across systems. Reduced friction expands participation and turns coordination into a powerful force that flips incentives. Markets grow when information flows and trust is high—but growth is only part of the story. When incentives shift from extraction to quality, markets realign. Commerce begins valuing contribution instead of control. Web3’s magic uses market-based solutions and everyday on-chain actions to solve global challenges.

Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations argued that trust and complete information unlock trapped value. In the old economy, that value was captured by firms profiting from opacity, asymmetry, and low-trust transactions. Interoperability means trapped value could be distributed more broadly across society.

Most small farmers, craft workers, and creators in global supply chains are paid commodity prices despite producing distinctive goods. When producers can't verify quality or compliance, their work is treated as interchangeable—even when it's exceptional. Here, strategy and marketing failures to signal quality cause market failure. Entrenched interests exploit the information mismatch.

Economic agency changes that. When you can show how your work is different, valuable, and rare—like Web3 does—and when systems are built to reward differentiation, creators can negotiate for a better deal. Web3 doesn’t guarantee power. But it gives people at the bottom the structural footing of a level playing field.

This is how systemic change happens. Daily interactions on a level playing field bubble-up as positive change. When quality matters, the ability to command premium pricing increases. When trust and verification are embedded in infrastructure, systems migrate from gatekeeping to coordination. We can all create without giving up control. New forms of trade emerge that are fairer, more circular, and more aligned with your community's standards. In the age of interoperable systems, on-chain freedom is the new freedom.

Seven. The Right to Simplicity and Clarity

Transparent, consistent, accountable agreements.

Now that most people are online, Big Tech's revenue model is enshittification. Simplicity and clarity help you avoid that.

What it means: Simplicity and clarity are how agreements become accountable. Contracts, governance processes, and platform rules will be simple, understandable, transparent, and consistently applied. Over time, consistency becomes reliability—and reliability becomes trust.

Why it matters: Computer code is still written in zeros and ones, which don't play favorites. Something is true, or it is false. When agreements are translated into open-source code, it means transactions run the same way for everyone. Web3 makes that kind of consistency normal. It changes the stakes—especially for people who have spent their lives navigating unstable, unpredictable systems. Extractors will hate it. Creators will love it.

In Web2, Terms of Service are vague, buried in fine print, and subject to change. These days, when you get a notice about terms changing, it isn’t because you're getting lower prices or better service.

In Web3, smart contracts are beginning to replace Terms with precision code that doesn’t change without a democratic process. The difference between open-source code and published policy is that code doesn’t rely on interpretation. It runs exactly as written, for everyone, every time.

Visibility creates accountability, measurement, and recourse. On-chain agreements mean knowing how rules are applied, how often complaints are upheld, and whether outcomes match stated values. That's a significant, structural shift—especially for low-income communities. Poor people live in uncertainty by default. Promises fall through. Prices change. Go-betweens lie. In that context, reliability and accountability become real power.

I've met cotton farmers and textile handweavers in India who prioritize reliable payment over maximizing income. At the bottom, kept promises are the tradeoff between subsistence, survival, and prosperity.

When systems behave predictably, people begin to plan. Save. Invest. Organize. The cultural shifts from short-term survival to long-term plans. Geert Hofstede observed that long-term orientation is foundational to a society's growth. Simplicity and clarity don’t just reduce confusion—they lay the groundwork for progress.

Eight. Democratic Governance in Digital Communities

Consent-based, community rules—written by the governed.

On-chain entities work less like traditional corporations and more like community management systems. Owners and communities write, negotiate, and vote on the rules they want—on systems they choose. Nothing changes without a defined consent process. On-chain projects may be company bylaws and different forms of legal ownership, but governance will be structurally driven by the network’s protocol code.

What it means: Rules that define consent and enforce accountability will be written by those they govern.

Why it matters: By removing the barriers to large-scale coordination, on-chain community governance shifts power from executives to stakeholders . More people, from more places, can participate at low cost. These systems are still early. Some will stall. Some will fail. But the shift has already begun—and it's changing how commerce works,

Nine. The Right to Trust Transactions

Rights. Responsibilities. Risks. Recomposed Trust.

Agreements have clear, visible, universal terms—without fear, favor, bias, or manipulation.

What it means: Anyone can make reliable on-chain agreements. Because these agreements are written in code, transactions happen automatically when the terms are met.

Responsibilities

You need to understand what the agreement says. On-chain actions are less forgiving of human mistakes and can’t interpret intent. If you don’t think an agreement is fair, don’t sign it. Because you have the right to walk away and take your assets with you, you’ll solve fairness challenges by choosing partners who offer better terms based on how you define value.

Recomposed Trust

Historically, rich people benefit from laws without being bound by them. Poor people are bound by laws but don’t always benefit from them. Smart contracts flip that dynamic. Transaction trust, available to anyone, becomes a new foundation for how communities function and cooperate.

Why It Matters

Higher transaction trust is available to anyone on-chain. This universal access enables broader cooperation, collaboration, and social trust. Reliable agreements foster a stronger sense of individual security—and systems become dependable by design.

Geert Hofstede’s research found that when people can trust agreements will be honored and exchanges will be fair, they are more likely to invest in their future—in health, education, and community. Trust shifts orientation—from short-term survival to long-term growth.

Ten. The Right to Expect Honesty

On-chain transparency accountability, & proof drives value-aligned choices.

Marketing

Big changes are coming to marketing. On-chain information about a company's products, policies, and performance—origin, composition, and impact—will be evident, truthful, and provable. This data, akin to a "digital nutrition label," will be available to anyone and owned by no one.

Why it matters: Business transparency marks a permanent power shift, arming you with the knowledge to shape the world through your choices. When you can see how a product is made, by whom, and at what cost to people and the planet, you’ll drive demand for what you value.

New Consumer Power

Expect accountability: When everything is transparent, it becomes harder for companies to hide exploitation, waste, or harm. The flip side: it becomes easier for consumers to find—and reward—fair, healthy, and sustainable options.

Trust Drifts Towards Revenue

Ethical producers will gain a competitive edge. Waste, or its absence, becomes a key product attribute, driving innovation toward circular systems where resources are valued, not discarded. Inherent product merits—its positive social and environmental impact—becomes a selling point. Visibility allows products to showcase responsible practices and command price premiums for differentiated approaches to quality.

The "Why" for Businesses (Beyond Ethics): In an on-chain world, transparency can become comparative/competitive advantage—with impact beyond ethical obligations. Transparency builds long-term customer loyalty, reduces the risk of scandal or regulatory fallout, and opens new data-driven insights into operations, demand, and differentiation.

Marketing Shifts to Telling Real Product Stories

When products carry their own facts, and they do on-chain, trust shifts. You will still want to rely on brands as proxies for quality, ethics, or sustainability. But, you won't need to do that if you can verify anything on public blockchains. Marketing becomes less about persuasion and more about telling real product stories—already written in the product's traceable journey.

While the US concentrates corporate power, denies climate change, menaces friends and trashes the rules-based order, the EU's 2020 Green Deal unfolds as strategic genius. The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) uses the scale required for climate action to integrate decentralized technologies throughout the economy. Integrating Web3 into trade realigns national interests, strengthens strategic autonomy, drives industrial renewal, lessens the wealth gap, advances circular economies, and lowers populist rage. Put simply, the US is leaning into neoliberalism, while the EU reaches for tech-driven populism—and builds resistance to Trump 2.0.

The EU's Pivot

In 2020, the EU rewrote its laws to disrupt the origins of climate change, environmental degradation, and rising populism. Rather than continuing to treat symptoms, the EU uproots causation by prioritizing prevention over cleanup and using technology to embed policy (and democracy) throughout the economy. I predict we'll consider 2025 the year the EU Green Deal moved away from zero-sum rewards toward a "We Economy" that works for more people. In 2024 public opinion polls, seven in ten EU citizens backed their energy transition. Around 43% want the transition to go faster.

I argue the EU Green Deal is a meta-solution that can overcome Big Tech's advantages, renew civic life, and restore a real shot at opportunity, health, and a better future for families. Using circularity to build strategic autonomy makes Europe a lot more agnostic about whatever the US and China do. It's also the only national policy with the scale to check future Category 5 hurricanes, mega-fires, rising authoritarianism, trade imbalances—and hegemon exits.

The Plan

In 2025, the EU activates the Green Deal strategy of "growth without consumption." Their first moves are legal and policy shifts contained in the ESPR. The ESPR builds new ways to measure supply chain trade's economic activity and environmental impact via an innovation called Digital Product Passports (DPPs), which trace products from raw materials to recycling bins. The second project introduces Web3 technology that reaches for legal and policy goals with blockchain-style DPP networks that collect rivers of new climate and trade data. The third catalyzes a cultural change by restoring basic bargaining power to the little guy. Together, these create market-based solutions to previously unfixable problems.

Policy & Measurement

Over 30% of global GDP comes from countries that require some level of supply chain tracing—a figure set to grow even as the US backpedals on these requirements or the EU Simplification Agenda is a volte-face. The ESPR is global sustainability's 800-pound gorilla because it is a unified framework for circularity, sovereignty, trade, and equity, (and the most comprehensive large-market legislation). The ESPR creates the conditions for circularity and builds a digital wall around EU consumers. At core, DPPs track supply chains, prove production methods and environmental impact. Regardless of where raw materials, components, or finished products come from, most products require DPPs to access EU customers.

Circularity requires redesigning products, building digital supply chain infrastructure, and ensuring robust data systems that plan for the end at the beginning. A major barrier to circular adoption is the loss of product information after the first sale. Keeping product information accessible on public blockchains unlocks the economic value of both raw and recaptured materials by enabling ongoing repair, reuse, and recycling. These records store essential data about materials, problematic inputs, repair instructions, and end-of-life requirements. This foundation allows industries to shift away from the traditional linear "take, make, waste" model and transition to circular systems.

Why do it?

Circularity transforms economies by keeping materials in use—weakening resource monopolies, reducing raw material costs, minimizing waste, and creating high-value jobs. Decoupling prosperity from raw material imports and embedding supply chain tracing challenges the economic foundations of authoritarianism and creates economies that resist manipulation, cronyism, and centralized control. Circularity also fulfills consumer demands for better products and practices while uncovering untapped opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and resilience

Web3 and Digital Public Goods

Blockchain networks are evolving beyond NFTs, token drops, and crypto casinos into real-world, open-source public infrastructure. The United Nations Development Programme writes: "We must undertake a concerted global effort to encourage and invest in the creation of Digital Public Goods."

Digital Public Goods (DPGs) are designed to counter Big Tech's surveillance capitalism and lessen the digital divide, which makes them night-and-day different from memecoin casinos. These open, distributed networks work quietly—on climate action, circularity, public services, and governance—while restoring rights, freedoms, responsibilities, and trust pirated by Big Tech. They can make promises around people, data, money, and services—like owning our personal data so it cannot be weaponized against us.

Digital Public Goods are frontier technologies, but they're happening now. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's Mojaloop project shows the power of a shared global brain. By collapsing costs and scaling access, Mojaloop provides banking services to a billion people who make about two dollars a day. Estonia's X-Road transparently powers public administration. If Web2 was about communication, Web3 is about computation and transformation. The Web3 vision: AI will make top expertise nearly free. DPGs make top computing power almost free. Available to everyone. Owned by no one.

Embedding climate, circularity, and societal goals into economic systems aligns incentives with long-term sustainability. By coding populist priorities like fairness, trust, transparency, and accountability into life online, these tools automate oversight, reduce dependence on traditional institutions, and enable collaboration without surrendering autonomy, control, or consent. Over time, digitization and automation fundamentally redefine governance and market dynamics. DPPs will become the builders, police, accountants, librarians, and trade negotiators of Green Deal success.

The ESPR demonstrates how distributed networks drive systemic transformation. By embedding community and individual rights at supply chain touchpoints, decentralization redistributes power, control, and money to a network's edges. Creators everywhere will have more market voice. When supply chain tracing scales across blockchain networks, sustainability data transforms fragmented interests into a third force—a unified framework for economic, environmental, and social renewal. Collectively, these changes empower small players to negotiate based on their contributions rather than their market position.

Culture and Bargaining Power

John Maynard Keynes argued that economic instability— recently effloresced by a pandemic, war, high inflation, stagnant wages, and rising immigration—creates uncertainty, deepens inequality, and limits the capacity to thrive. Web3 blockchain networks counter Big Tech's centralized power by embedding rights, freedoms, responsibilities, and trust into daily transactions. In Michael Porter's terms, restored rights strengthen the bargaining power of those at the bottom. Soon, everyone in a transaction can agitate for a fair deal. Small changes at the bottom ripple through trade relationships to neutralize legacy advantages, transform markets, and drive systemic change toward healthier, freer, fairer capitalism. It is inevitable that these new Web3-supplied rights will change culture.

The Secret Sauce

Bargaining power is the secret sauce to creating systemic change, ameliorating malaise-fueled populism and reversing neoliberal mistakes. Empowering individuals to bargain for their interests aligns democratic priorities—trade, defense, security, and free markets—with well-being and fairness. Bargaining power is how the economy starts working for the people who create value rather than only those who control it. Decentralization = #Resistance. It also equals progress.

Time to Walk the Talk

What kind of economic, trade, technology and social systems would we create if we started over? Digital Public Goods and Digital Public Infrastructure are emerging categories of Web3 technologies that answer these questions. There are working examples of these innovations that make everything I know about climate remediation and the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals actionable. In other words, we can finally stop talking and start doing—we can be the change. These new frameworks will reshape our lives even more profoundly than the Web2 Internet has over three decades. On-chain projects natively increase bargaining leverage for stakeholders at the bottom.

When most of us hear Web3 or blockchain, we think of crypto, NFTs, and air-dropped token economies—which are dazzling casinos disconnected from daily life. Web3's truly impactful innovations are the underlying blockchain-style frameworks quietly constructing social benefit infrastructure. An important new development, Mojaloop, a DPG from the Gates Foundation is a the proof-of-concept you’ll want to know about. Mojaloop joins Holochain and other DPGs/DPI in creating equitable, interoperable, and secure systems that will define the future of public benefit projects. Here’s how DPGs/DPI work on climate, circularity, human rights, and governance.

Digital Public Goods, Digital Public Infrastructure & Systemic Change

The Cambridge Dictionary says, "A systemic problem or change is a basic one, experienced by the whole of an organization or a country and not just particular parts of it." Digital Public Goods (DPGs) and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) are collaborative tools that drive bottom-up systemic change. I say “systemic” because decentralized transactions and information exchanges increase bargaining power for those at the bottom of the economic pyramid, by delivering on promises around people, data, and money. This makes DPGs/DPI more than just technology—they reorder the foundations of democratic, digital, community-based collaboration, management, and market ecosystems—in favor of people at the bottom. Changes in negotiating strength ripple through relationship economies to create organization-level systemic change.  The United Nations Development Programme estimates DPI can accelerate economic growth by 20% to 33% in low and middle-income countries.

Understanding Web3 & Blockchain-Like Services

Web3 is a broad, flexible term for technologies like the Metaverse, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Blockchain-type services. "Agents"—technology frameworks that act independently, without human involvement—differentiate Web2 from Web3. AI and blockchain-based Agents work differently, but both follow pre-agreed rules or generative actions. Code-driven decisions are the dynamism and newness that makes Web3 so useful.

Agents

Adding to the confusion, "Agents" are both a technology and an economic framework. Agents can participate in economic activities like creating value, exchanging resources, and making agreements with other agents. Agents can be individuals, organizations/groups that act as one, or ecological entities (like forests and ecosystems) to account for environmental impacts and relationships. This flexibility aligns with Web3's on-chain dynamism, where traditional double-entry bookkeeping will transform into the ISO-standard Resources, Events, and Agents (REA) system. REA makes the world's $100 trillion GDP programmable.

In October 2024, the Gates Foundation announced the activation of Mojaloop, a DPG that delivers Web3 banking services through DPI partners. DPI addresses structural, and societal challenges to help people transform their lives and communities. In Mojaloop's case, it enables mobile payments that bring 730 million unbanked adults into the digital economy. 2025 is a pivotal year—when the transition from Web2 to Web3 flips access to opportunities, information, and services—leveling the playing field for hundreds of millions more people. 

Progress. Prevention. Systemic Transformation.

DPGs and DPI introduce transformative tools that add new value while providing critical safeguards. These systems create prescriptive transformations, new capabilities and novel protections. When shocks occur, as they inevitably do, DPI’s become a new type of defensive safety net by offering resilient and incorruptible governance-in-code that works no matter what.

Collaborative access to economic information, a key prescriptive feature, unlocks value by fostering more equitable decision-making. Armed with real-time data, individuals and communities can make informed choices that promote both equity and productivity. Imagine how the Covid response or the Financial Crisis of 2008-2009 could have been different if everyone had known causation earlier? Simultaneously? Peer-to-peer collaboration could shift from today’s monolithic, divisive economic models toward a more inclusive, individualized system that expands opportunities. Put simply, better coordination empowers more people to thrive.

What If?

While prescriptive elements create value, proscriptive functions are equally important. DPGs and DPIs can act as economic shock absorbers, autonomously allocating resources like food, shelter, and services, adjusting taxes and subsidies, and delivering aid where needed. These systems could accelerate recovery in disrupted communities. During Hurricane Idalia in 2023, for example, DPG/DPI systems could have enabled faster, more targeted aid distribution and could have coordinated local resources and volunteers. Real-time data sharing could have predicted flooding patterns, saving lives and reducing the $2.5 billion in damages. Applied to challenges like climate migration and powered by Web3 technologies and 2 billion smallholders, the potential for DPG/DPI transformations is immense.

Open-Source Economic, Governance, & Participation Frameworks

Open-Source frameworks lower barriers to participation and empower people—especially those at the bottom—to actively shape their futures. A lightweight, open-source approach to DPGs and DPI fosters rapid innovation with lower costs and risks. Perfect for low-cost, low-resources countries. The open-source ethos encourages broader innovation without vendor lock-in or reliance on expensive proprietary systems. The flexibility of "lite solutions" and composable code allows fast adaptation to emerging needs, enabling systems tailored for local contexts. 

Adaptability empowers diverse groups to develop and refine projects, ranging from localized initiatives to large, complex economic systems. My analysis is that DPG/DPI adoption will follow the Gartner Hype Cycle. Mojaloop is the innovation trigger. But, Open-Source, low-cost, composable development could speed-up the DPGs/DPI hype cycle. Projects and adoption could all move fast now.

The Rise of Stakeholders and Democratic Capitalism

DPGs empower stakeholders with new models of governance, participation, and consensus rooted in democratic principles. Open-source transparency builds trust through auditable decision-making, while decentralized protocols align DPGs with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Taken together, DPGs and DPI decentralize power, control, and money—pushing them towards the network’s edges.

In decentralized environments, one-way value extraction transforms into two-way community-driven management and value creation. DPIs drive systemic change by increasing transparency, reducing cronyism, reshaping how businesses organize, how brands position, and how partners collaborate—to deliver long-term stakeholder value.

Post-Conflict Governance & Reconstruction

DPI fosters transparent, accountable market ecosystems by embedding policies and operations in digital systems. This recenters market forces and balances environmental sustainability, economic prosperity, and democratic governance. In conflict areas like Ukraine and Gaza, where infrastructure is destroyed, DPI can restore essential services and business operations faster than rebuilding physical structures. 

The Gates Foundation's Mojaloop project demonstrates this: in Tanzania, Mojaloop enables interoperable digital payments between banks, mobile providers, and financial services, expanding financial inclusion without extensive physical infrastructure. The United Nations Development Programme claims banking more people via DPIs could add up to $2 trillion to the GDP of emerging economies by 2030. Over time, a wide range of DPGs and Open-Source distributed networks will emerge to serve communities affordable, localized services.

Digital Public Infrastructure & the EU Green Deal

Europe's grand project is the circular economy metamorphosis based on a "growth without consumption" strategy. The European Union's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)—at the intersection of fashion, technology, and sustainability—sets up the circumstances for circularity. The ESPR inaugurates what I believe is the most consequential transformation of global trade since World War II.

The ESPR legislates Digital Product Passports, which require robust supply chain tracing and product development rules that fundamentally change how goods are made. Fashion will lead circularity because textiles are in the first tranche of products. The ESPR's volume and complexity require blockchain-style automation. DPI creates transparent, accountable economic structures that recenter market forces and balance environmental sustainability, economic prosperity, and democratic governance. To me, that means DPGs and DPIs are the only viable technology path to achieving the regulation's letter and spirit.

A New Ethos

Holochain is a DPG technology infrastructure, a community management system, and a market ecosystem that can make promises around people, data, and money at almost zero transaction costs. Zero transaction costs really matter if the EU wants to bring the Global South into the Green Deal project. Holochain has most of the advantages of blockchain, with none of the drawbacks of high prices, energy use, and scalability. Holochain uses a distributed network design that deploys unused computing and storage on cell phones and laptops at low costs and at huge scale.

Open-Source protocols redefine collaboration, value creation, and governance by embracing ethical principles like open access, transparent governance, and equitable participation. Holochain can create alternative Digital Product Passports (DPPs) for everyone, everywhere. It may even be possible for Holochain to go beyond currently envisioned DPPs with product-level (vs. batch-level) NFT-style verifications that embed climate goals and democratic values into transactions. Moreover, the ESPR creates an economic infrastructure inherently resistant to manipulation, cronyism and authoritarianism. Holochain, as a solution for Digital Product Passports, is not just a technology but a vision for a better, more democratic, more sustainable future.

No More Excuses

The real question isn't whether these tools will transform the world—Mojaloop demonstrates that DPGs already are. The better question is how we will harness the tools to build the future we need—or, more aptly, how your community will shape its destiny through DPGs and DPI.

By actively engaging with these economic powerhouses, we can take charge of our economic and environmental futures—solving problems that have long seemed intractable. There are no more excuses for waiting to unlock a more equitable, creative, resilient, and sustainable world. We have proof that DPGs and DPI work. Let’s get after it.

United Nations Development Programme Definitions

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) describes Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) as shaping digital components that enable public and private service delivery at scale and catalyze vibrant and dynamic innovation ecosystems of businesses, civil society organizations, and other innovations. By applying DPI across economies and societies and using it to tackle sector-specific priorities and challenges, countries can accelerate their growth and development – with positive impacts on people, the planet, and prosperity.

The UNDP defines DPGs as "Any open-source software, open data, open AI model, open standard or open content that does no harm by design, as well as helps with the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals." They're designed to be freely and openly available for everyone to use and adapt, particularly in developing countries. And DPIs as " A set of digital building blocks which are interoperable, built on open standards and specifications providing access to public and private services at societal scale and are governed by enabling rules to drive innovation, inclusion, and competition in the digital economy."

Understanding Web3 is like explaining how to use a smartphone to someone who's never seen one. But, the ripening of Web3 technology, with its potential for transparent and decentralized systems, is how climate policy became central to the EU's thinking about economy, security, values, and democracy. Russia's invasion of Ukraine, COVID-19 disruptions, a swaggering China and Web3’s readiness catalyzed this shift. The EU responded to the new geopolitical threats with a huge strategic flex that leveraged its economic weight and market power to expand and toughen its climate plan by building a digital wall. Supply chain tracing on distributed networks now addresses climate, counters geopolitical threats, and promotes European values. In other words, supply chain tracing code is how they counter strongmen.

The EU's structural power and the Web3 capabilities embedded in the ESPR are tools for systemic change. Web3 frameworks and associated transparency drive the circular economy transition, enhance sustainability, and counter anything that does not match EU values. The EU's Green Deal strategy of "growth without consumption" addresses climate change by establishing circular systems to capture the economic value wasted in linear systems of take, make, waste. This approach addresses environmental concerns and acknowledges geopolitical implications; recovering and reusing imported minerals weakens the resource monopolies exploited by authoritarian regimes. By decoupling prosperity from raw materials imports and integrating supply chain tracing via distributed networks, the EU establishes circular economies, reduces carbon emissions, and undermines the economic pillars of authoritarianism.

Governance in Code

Web3 technologies are redefining governance. If distributed networks are simply protocols and code, governance becomes whatever communities choose. On-chain tracing systems can create and manage resilient, low-carbon supply chains, enforce sustainability standards, track resource flows and emissions, and maintain product lifecycle databases. The ESPR deploys these innovations, with Web3's smart contracts and distributed ledgers to activate systemic change.

"Agents" are a distinctive feature of Web3's AI and blockchain innovations, enabling dynamic, automated interactions without human intervention. In AI, agents are powerful because they can make final decisions autonomously. In blockchain contexts, agents—in the form of smart contracts—enforce policies and automate processes. Automations are key to achieving change at scale.

These agent-based systems are particularly powerful when applied to supply chains. Supply chain tracing systems are emerging as a new kind of exploitation-free digital institution—decentralized, transparent, and resistant to manipulation. The ESPR provides unprecedented visibility into supply chains, making it increasingly difficult for any actor, autocratic or otherwise, to hide environmental abuses, resource exploitation, or corruption. Transactions and resource transfers become visible and verifiable. Agent-based systems automate compliance, sustainability, and ethical standards. By embedding climate goals and democratic values into transactions, the ESPR creates an economic infrastructure inherently resistant to manipulation and cronyism.

The EU's Moral Authority and Global Politics

Over 80% of EU citizens back Green Deal policies as vital to maintaining quality of life. Internal support matters—especially as the U.S. and China fall behind climate commitments. The EU leverages public support to assert cross-border ESPR compliance for suppliers. Put simply, the EU is building a digital wall against products and countries that don’t share their values. I see this as a big plank in the realignment of trade among democracies with democracies and autocracies with autocracies.

Supply chain tracing across the product lifecycle—enabled by distributed networks—creates the circumstances to foster circularity. Tracking products from raw materials to end-of-life upholds environmental and ethical standards, reduces emissions, flexes EU values and prevents authoritarian regimes from exploiting opaque production processes.

Democracy by Design

The EU and US seem headed in different directions on climate and governance. The US Chamber of Commerce is suing the SEC and California over new climate disclosure rules. Project 2025 consolidates executive power and undermines democratic checks and balances. Conversely, the EU's "encoded government" embeds democratic principles, climate objectives, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) directly into trade. Transparency, accountability, and climate remediation are a compelling alternative to authoritarianism and denial masquerading as freedom.

While the EU reinforces both climate goals and democratic values, the U.S. and China prioritize futuristic climate tech over immediate action. The EU’s transparent rules and distributed networks resist regulatory manipulation and autocratic capture. Encoding rules systemically harmonizes enforcement, buffers political shifts and prevents corporate capture of regulators. By making it harder to conceal environmental harm, traceability checks unfair enrichment and power consolidation.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution

The Fourth Industrial Revolution embeds technology and automation everywhere. The Metaverse creates life-like virtual experiences. AI makes the best expertise almost free. Distributed networks like Holochain create public technology infrastructure that enables community-based collaboration, management, and market ecosystems by delivering on promises around people, data, and money. This increases makers' bargaining power, shifts control to the network's edges, and drives systemic change.

Governance in Code is Normalizing

Governance in code is not a new concept. Estonia's X-Road forms the backbone of its popular e-governance system. Switzerland's Zug blockchain-based voting, and Taiwan's vTaiwan platform foster public participation in lawmaking. Blockchain-like capabilities are essential to digital governance at scale. Given the complexity of supply chains, the need for robust compliance mechanisms, and the sheer scale of the EU's €16.7 trillion GDP and €2.5 trillion in imports, the same is true for trade. This shift toward algorithmic governance enables real-time, data-driven compliance systems that function as builders, police, accountants, librarians, and trade negotiators to ensure the Green Deal's success. The EU's model is compelling and the public is likely to love the common sense of it. Authoritarians are likely to hate it.

Networks vs Networks

The EU's Green Deal, a climate initiative reconstructed into a digital wall, is a transformative leap in systemic problem-solving. By addressing a global crisis like climate change, we can fortify open societies and activate linked solutions. Encoding policies and operations in distributed networks, the EU creates transparent, accountable economic structures that redefine the balance between environmental sustainability, economic prosperity, and democratic governance via systems that repel bad guys. The EU's Green Deal demonstrates how distributed technologies can drive systemic change by strengthening democracy and open societies while tackling climate change and aligning economic growth within environmental limits.

Anne Applebaum writes that autocracies are now networks of actors.  "If you're fighting the dictator of Belarus, that means he's backed by the Russians, and he has business deals with China, and he has support in the United Nations from Cuba. This network that they've created as a group is stronger than any one of them is alone."

Only networks can disrupt networks.

Data reporting regulations like Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are becoming clearer about how they support climate remediation, strategic autonomy, consumer power, and investor risk management. Current use cases focus on marketing, which means we must default to business analysis tools and other models like Digital Public Goods/Digital Public Infrastructure to understand the potential future. Over time, I believe we'll find that data reporting supports climate action, improves quality of life, and creates corporate value.

DPP tracing aligns closely with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  Let's use the SDGs as a familiar lens for analysis. Granular data provides companies with comprehensive tools to optimize transportation, enhance energy efficiency, and refine packaging and distribution strategies. A holistic approach reduces emissions, improves resource management, and supports honest marketing with verified sustainability data. It also fosters circular economy initiatives and promotes sustainable practices throughout product lifecycles.

DPPs introduce substantial benefits. Specifically, they provide insight into the holy grail of Scope 3 supplier emissions with detailed information such as quality control measures, testing results, and certifications, giving consumers, investors, and regulatory bodies greater confidence. The Wuppertal Institut's research concludes that business leaders broadly recognize the potential of well-designed DPPs to deliver both short and long-term benefits. By making product sustainability information accessible and comparable across supply chains, DPPs support the business transition to a decarbonized economy. Collectively, incentives align to support informed consumers and sustainable products and processes.

Implementing DPPs is challenging. The transition is likely to be complex, costly, and messy.  Potential risks include data security, evolving regulatory landscapes, and reputational damage if sustainability goals are unrealized. These hurdles will need active management. Please read this document as a top-line overview of how supply chain tracing supports the green transition with data-driven decisions.

Climate Remediation and Carbon Goals

Comprehensive Emissions Tracking:   DPPs enable companies to capture CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions across the entire product lifecycle by identifying emission hotspots for targeted reduction efforts.
